Interview with an Underdog
Get to Know Ulrick
Just like every human actor has an understudy, Tobias, who portrays Spot in Shakespeare in Love, has an underdog. We got a chance to sit down with young, up-and-comer, Ulrick, and ask him about his experience as an understudy and making his Orlando Shakespeare Theater debut.
Orlando Shakespeare Theater: Describe Shakespeare in Love in three words.
Ulrick Knightly: Woof. Bark. Bow-wow.
OST: We understand this is your stage debut. What encouraged you to take up acting?
UK: I tend to have a majestic presence when I walk in a room – it’s a natural gift, I suppose. My owner felt that this might be a good asset in front of a live audience, so I’m excited to bring my raw, natural talent to the stage.
OST: How did you find your inspiration for the role of Spot?
UK: Sitting, shaking, and laying down have always come easily to me. It’s all about listening to direction and knowing that a treat is seconds away.
OST: Describe your rehearsal experience. What was it like working with your human costars?
UK: At first, there were all these new people and new smells, however, it didn’t take long before I was comfortable with everyone, and that’s when the fun began. Everyone was really nice and gave me lots of pats on the head. The positivity really helped me focus on my cues and act when the command is given.
OST: What has it been like collaborating with your trainer, Christian?
UK: He’s always got a treat nearby, so that always helps to focus on the task at hand. Learning some new tricks has been fun as well and has helped our relationship.
OST: What is you favorite Shakespeare play?
UK: Well, Two Gentlemen of Verona does feature a dog, but I like A Midsummer Night’s Dream since it has a lot of humans pretending to be animals.
OST: Is this only the beginning of your performance career? What’s next for you?
UK: Depending on my performance and training for this show, I might be open to other offers out there. Of course, I’ll do anything for a treat.
OST: Any behind the scenes antics you want to share with our patrons?
UK: At my first stage debut, I got a tad bit distracted and walked up the steps into the audience. Everyone looked so friendly, I had to say, “Hi!”
