“Love is like a child
That longs for every thing that he can come by.”
Shakespeare’s gloriously silly story of love, friendship and growing up takes the stage at Orlando Shakes. This adaptation set in the 1980s is described as “Sixteen Candles” meets Shakespeare. The ME generation, yuppies rule, superficial, instant gratification over long-term gain, anyone different is looked askance upon, and the quest for romantic love and status tops everything. The Two Gentlemen of Verona will be performed by the The W. Daniel Mills apprentices as part of The Young Company.
Themes: Friendship; Romantic Love; Coming of Age/Change/Transformation; Social Class Differences; Gender Roles; Betrayal
Time: Over sixteen months during 1980s
Place:
- Verona: A high school in a midwestern American suburb.
- Milan: Big, rich Ivy League university town/small city.
- Mantua: Other side of the tracks of Milan, where punk rockers and head-bangers
rule.

About Daniel Mills
The W. Daniel Mills Program was founded by Harold and Rosy Mills in memory of their son Daniel, who tragically passed away in 2020. Since then, the Mills family has been committed to assisting and serving young artists throughout Central Florida by providing opportunities they might otherwise not receive.
“We are proud to partner with Orlando Shakes in providing these apprentice experiences to the young students of our community looking for a place to express themselves, thrive, and discover what it means to work in a professional theater setting,” the Mills family said. “Daniel was passionate about theater being the place where everyone has the opportunity to be their authentic self – a place where they can call home.”
