About This Production
Idealistic young lovers Maria and Tony find themselves caught between rival street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence, and prejudice is one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, and relevant musical dramas of our time. West Side Story’s legendary jazz, Latin, and classical-inspired score features the treasured songs “Maria,” “Tonight,” “I Feel Pretty,” and “America”.
Critic and Audience Reviews
-Matt Palm, Orlando SentinelOrlando Shakespeare Theater’s stellar production of the enduring classic only amplifies the musical’s power as it dramatically illustrates how quickly exuberant joy can turn to the deepest sorrow when hatred rears its ugly head.
-Kimberly Moy, BroadwayWorld.comThe casting is spot on and so is the music. It is a brilliant choice for Orlando Shakes’ mainstage musical. I cannot wait to see what they pick next season.
-Michael McLeodIt’s such a pleasure to be reminded of why and how the Broadway musical is a uniquely American art form. It’s ours. We made it up. It stemmed from our immigrant-based culture as we sought out our place in the world. And because this production is done so well, you see that. You see through to the heart and soul of one of the most uniquely American evocations of a uniquely American art form.
